What's a Climate Selfie?
/If you’re wanting to do more about climate change, I’ve been encouraging folks to start with what you bring to the table rather than with what the experts advise. You may already know how confusing it can be to try to pick from someone else’s “top 10 climate actions”.
Consider starting with yourself as a kind of personal inventory. You may already be familiar with other inventories like the “fearless moral” one used by 12-step programs. Or, you may have done team-building inventories on the job used to help workers coordinate their different skills.
How to Take a Climate Selfie
Maybe our culture’s saturation with cell phone selfies can be of use here. Of course, the focus is on our image but often the visual backgrounds give clues to our natural environments and what’s important to us. This shot of an astronaut conveys that he is indeed an earthling by including the background of our planet’s atmosphere.
If you already have plenty of selfies in your phone, you might scroll through some to see what they reveal about what’s important to you in your environments. For example, if they’re mostly in restaurants, that’s a hint to consider climate actions that involve food. For more climate ideas, you can also take some new selfies in your favorite nature environments. If the backgrounds convey how hot or cold it is or how wet or dry, you can emphasize the climate aspects even more.
Location, Location, Location
By paying attention to the backgrounds of your selfies, you’re building an album that shows local places where you are often located. Since most of us can’t get out into the atmosphere for that really big astronaut’s view, you can mark your global location on a world map.
